Chapter 5: Creating Marine Protected Area Networks. Since the 1980s, a major objective for the establishment of MPAs in the Philippines has been to enhance coral reef fisheries. In fact, 294 of the 339 actively managed MPAs in the Philippines are dominated by coral reef habitat (Reefbase, 2015).
