25 Σεπ 2024 · This releases two main climate-warming greenhouse gases: CO 2, and even more potent methane. Seasonal thawing in the Arctic is normal. The region has very cold winters and warmer summers. Every year, the top, “active layer” of soil thaws and refreezes, exchanging methane and CO 2 with the atmosphere.
20 Αυγ 2018 · Lakes that form from this thawing permafrost can speed up the release of methane — a potent greenhouse gas — from Arctic soil. As the climate warms, carbon frozen in the soil makes its way into the atmosphere.
27 Μαρ 2015 · In order to investigate the response of methane emissions from this region to global warming, a process-based climate-sensitive lake biogeochemical model was developed. The processes of methane production, oxidation, and transport were modeled within a one-dimensional sediment and water column.
19 Μαΐ 2016 · For different experimental scales, site locations, and soil moisture conditions, the XHAM model accurately simulates methane uptake from arctic mineral soils. Models that do not include microbial biomass dynamics or do not parameterize high-affinity methanotrophy exhibit significant biases.
30 Μαρ 2020 · Methane emissions from organic-rich soils in the Arctic have been extensively studied due to their potential to increase the atmospheric methane burden as permafrost thaws1–3.
7 Ιαν 2016 · Here we synthesize observations of ∼ 1,900 fluid escape features—pockmarks and active gas flares—across a previously glaciated Arctic margin with ice-sheet thermomechanical and gas hydrate...
