While some researchers have asserted that religion is an essential part of an individual’s culture, other researchers have focused more on how religion is a culture in itself. The key difference is how researchers conceptualize and operationalize both of these terms.
How do our religious perspectives affect our behavior? These are questions sociologists ask and are reasons they study religion. What are peoples’ conceptions of the profane and the sacred? How do religious ideas affect the real-world reactions and choices of people in a society?
While culture refers to the shared customs, traditions, and practices of a particular group or society, religion is a system of beliefs and worship that often plays a central role in shaping culture. Both culture and religion provide individuals with a sense of identity, belonging, and purpose.
