Knowledge of vein wall anatomy and physiology is necessary in understanding the potential complications of IV therapy. The vein wall consists of three layers and each has very specific characteristics and considerations involved in the introduction of IV catheters and the administration of IV fluid. 7
DO use a segment of vein that is fairly straight for the length of the IV catheter and large enough to cannulate. Often you need a vein that is clearly visible and/or one that you can palpate with a rubbery/bouncy feedback. After choosing, you also need to pick the specific skin insertion point.
Upon completion of this learning package, the health care provider performing venipuncture (phlebotomist) will be able to: Describe the significant differences between veins and arteries. Explain the process and criteria for vein assessment and selection and possible contraindications to venipuncture site selection.
