There are three types of Asian pear: round or flat fruit with green to yellow skin; round or flat fruit with bronze-colored skin and a light bronze-russet; and pear-shaped fruit with green or russet skin.

Asian pear varieties are numerous with over 25 known in California and hundreds of varieties known in the Orient. Selection of the better varieties for planting and future sales is a problem for all involved with this crop.
Most pear varieties are self-sterile and require cross-pollination by another variety to get a good crop set. One exception is the Sacramento River delta region where “Bartlett” is self-fruitful, setting crops of parthenocarpic fruits.
