If you search on Steam (specifically in the “Guides” section of the community hub) you should find a fix for this titled “Xbox Controller Fix”. I replayed all of the games recently and I needed to find fixes for various things.

Wireless Xbox 360 fix for Assassin's Creed I and II. Should work the same for Series X controller. Also update controller firmware with xbox accessories app if you haven't already.
PSA: If you're using an XBox Wireless Controller on Windows 10, you can update the controller firmware with the "XBox Accessories" app available from the Microsoft Store. I had no idea about this, and it actually solved a number of Bluetooth connectivity issues I was having.
On the Xbox Wireless Controller screen, select “…” to check the firmware version for your controller. If it says “Update,” select Firmware version, and then follow the steps provided. Things to keep in mind: Be sure you’re using a USB cable that supports data transfer.
