The Astoria Column was constructed in 1926 and is 125 feet tall. A spiral staircase with 164 steps leads to the observation deck. The exterior is covered with sgraffito artwork, a technique in which images are engraved in plaster and then colored powders are blown into the outline.
Litchfield drew heavily from classical forms for the Astoria Column. He found inspiration from Trajan’s Column in Rome and the Vendome Column in Paris. Inside the 100-foot Trajan Column, a staircase wound upward, culminating at a viewing platform above a forum.

The Astoria Column is a tower in the northwest United States, overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River on Coxcomb Hill in Astoria, Oregon. Built in 1926, the concrete and steel structure is part of a 30-acre (12 ha) city park called Astor Park.
The column stands 125 feet (38 meters) tall and stands atop Coxcomb Hill, with an observation deck at the top of the column allowing for sweeping views of the Columbia River Estuary, Astoria, and the surrounding landscape below.
