Outline: Atopic dermatitis is an allergic skin disease which is common in the West Highland white terrier, possibly affecting 25% of dogs. It causes mild to severe itching which, as a result of scratching or rubbing, often leads to further skin damage, irritation, infection and discomfort.
Most affected dogs (60%) developed signs of cAD during their first year of life and males were over-represented. The location of clinical signs mirrored those of previous descriptions. The severity of cAD was mild in 36% and severe in 13% of affected WHWTs.
Dogs with atopic dermatitis have a dysregulated immune system, causing immune cells to produce the cytokines (protein messages that cells use to communicate with each other) that underlie the dog’s clinical signs.
