Charles had promised to give the Lutherans a fair hearing, and the Augsburg Confession was their presentation of what they believed and confessed.

On June 25, 1530, the confession of faith was presented by Philipp Melancthon, who spoke on behalf of various German rulers and free cities to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Augsburg.
