On June 25, 1530, the confession of faith was presented by Philipp Melancthon, who spoke on behalf of various German rulers and free cities to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Augsburg.

The Augsburg Confession, also known as the Augustan Confession or the Augustana from its Latin name, Confessio Augustana, is the primary confession of faith of the Lutheran Church and one of the most important documents of the Protestant Reformation.
The Apology of the Augsburg Confession (Article 21) lists three reasons for such honor. First, we thank God for giving faithful servants to His Church. Second, through such remembrance our faith is strengthened as we see the mercy that God extended to His saints of old.
