James Berry, who was born in Jamaica but moved to England as a young man, has helped to forge a new type of poetry that draws on Caribbean idioms and experiences. His work is widely admired for its sensitive understanding of West Indian and British cultures, and its innovative use of language.
Biography. James Berry was born in 1924 in Jamaica and after working in the US for a time, settled in Britain in 1948. His adult poetry collections are: Fractured Circles (1979); Lucy's Letters and Loving (1982); Chain of Days (1985); Hot Earth Cold Earth (1995); and Windrush Songs (2007).
One of the first black writers in Britain to achieve wider recognition, Berry rose to prominence in 1981 when he won the National Poetry Competition. His five collections of poetry and his stories and poems for children have been widely acclaimed.
