James Berry, OBE, Hon. FRSL (28 September 1924 – 20 June 2017), [1] was a Jamaican poet who settled in England in the 1940s. His poetry is notable for using a mixture of standard English and Jamaican Patois. [2]

Biography. James Berry was born in 1924 in Jamaica and after working in the US for a time, settled in Britain in 1948. His adult poetry collections are: Fractured Circles (1979); Lucy's Letters and Loving (1982); Chain of Days (1985); Hot Earth Cold Earth (1995); and Windrush Songs (2007).

James Berry is one of Britain’s poetry titans. Born in 1924 in colonial Jamaica in a small coastal village called Fair Prospect, Berry travelled to the United States before finally settling in Britain in 1948. `Instantly, my great obsession was to improve my English language so I could begin to write’, wrote Berry of his arrival in England.
