Sound Waves and Ocean Acoustics. Acoustic (sound) waves have been called the “daylight” of the ocean. Unlike the air, light in the ocean is absorbed within tens of meters and the vast reaches of the ocean depths are almost completely dark. However, the ocean is largely transparent to acoustic waves.
Period: the time it takes for two successive crests to pass a given point. Frequency: the number of waves passing a point in a given amount of time, usually expressed as waves per second. This is the inverse of the period. Speed: how fast the wave travels, or the distance traveled per unit of time.
Ocean Waves are disturbances in the surface of the ocean. They can be created by wind, gravity, or other displacements of water. Satellites typically measure significant wave height, which is the average wave height of the highest third of waves in a given sample period.
