The Obelisk of Axum (Tigrinya: ሓወልቲ ኣኽሱም, romanized: ḥawelti Akhsum; Amharic: የአክሱም ሐውልት, romanized: Ye’Åksum ḥāwelt) is a 4th-century CE, 24-metre (79 ft) tall phonolite [3] stele, weighing 160 tonnes (160 long tons; 180 short tons), in the city of Axum in Ethiopia.

Incredibly each 'story' of the building reveals a frame with structural supports beside the windows, all of which suggest a modern construction.
21 Αυγ 2018 · The central towering obelisk of Axum is believed to be 1,700 years old. It is made of granite and weighs 160 tons. Its ornamentation consists of two false doors at the monument's base and a window-like decoration on the obelisk's all sides.

The current suffering and loss of life in northern Ethiopia is a far more pressing concern than the fate of stone edifices. But addressing the former is helped by understanding the latter, including painful questions of restitution.
Today, the former imperial capital at Aksum contains some of the best-preserved examples of Aksumite-style architecture, including stelae from the third and fourth centuries, and obelisks, royal tombs, and palaces dating from the sixth and seventh centuries.
