The Aztec Empire or the Triple Alliance (Classical Nahuatl: Ēxcān Tlahtōlōyān, [ˈjéːʃkaːn̥ t͡ɬaʔtoːˈlóːjaːn̥]) was an alliance of three Nahua city-states: Mexico-Tenochtitlan, Tetzcoco, and Tlacopan.
Beginning in the 14th century the American Indian people known as the Aztec ruled a large empire based in what is now Mexico City, Mexico. The grandeur of the capital, Tenochtitlan, showed power and wealth, and from that city their armies went out to conquer.
Aztec civilization is best known for its conquest at the hands of the Spanish conquistador, Hernan Cortez. There was far more to them that that, however. It represented the final phase of Pre-Columbian civilization in Central America, and as such it holds an iconic place in history.

This alliance governed the region in and, around the Valley of Mexico from 1428 until they were defeated by the combined forces of conquistadors and their indigenous allies led by Hernán Cortés in 1521.
This map is a cartographic history of the migration of the Aztec from Aztlán to Tenochtitlan. Created in the pictographic style typical of the central Mexican and Puebla valleys during the Post-Classical period, it is the only map of its kind known to exist.
