21 Φεβ 2024 · Anophthalmia is a rare congenital disorder where a baby is born without one or both eyes. It affects about 1 in every 100,000 births globally. This condition can occur independently or with other developmental abnormalities, indicating complicated genetic causes.
People can be born with one or two small eyes (microphthalmia) or without one or both eyes (anophthalmia). These conditions may also occur with other eye conditions or medical problems elsewhere on the body.

Primary anophthalmia is a complete absence of eye tissue due to a failure of the part of the brain that forms the eye. Secondary anophthalmia the eye starts to develop and for some reason stops, leaving the infant with only residual eye tissue or extremely small eyes which can only be seen under close examination.
