An emulator is necessary because it mimics the older operating systems that Backyard Baseball was designed for. Websites like scummvm.org or dosbox.com are good places to find these emulators.

Check out Abandonware.com for game files and the .iso file you download is a disc image of the original disc. Mount that .iso file and run the game. Alternatively you can use ScummVM, but it isn't necessary to run it.
