Bamenda is the highest city in Cameroon, located at an elevation of 1,500 meters (4,921 feet). The city is home to the Bamenda Craft Market, which is one of the largest markets in Cameroon. Bamenda is the site of the famous Bamenda Ring Road, which is a circular road that encircles the city.
The Bamenda Museum displays specimens of local handicrafts. A German fort there ( c. 1912) is a relic of the colonial period. A nurses’ training centre and a hospital serve the town, and the Cameroon College of Arts, Science, and Technology is located at nearby Bambili.
Bamenda is the founding place and seat of the largest opposition political party in Cameroon, the Social Democratic Front (SDF), and the home of its leader, John Fru Ndi. There is a large military presence throughout the city.
