On March 14, 1970, Thorburn was on a mission in Duc Lap in South Vietnam aboard a UH-1P (“Green Hornet”) with the 20th Special Operations Squadron, when the chopper was shot down by enemy fire which resulted in the captain’s death and three wounded soldiers, including Thorburn.

Originally built by the Imperial Japanese Army during WWII, it was rebuilt by the United States Air Force and used during the Vietnam War by both the USAF and the South Vietnamese Air Force.

On Sept. 11, 2001, the 20th SOS was training in North Carolina. The squadron quickly responded to assist with initial recovery efforts in New York and Washington, D.C.
