In many years of composing and teaching musical composition at various levels, I have been repeatedly struck by the dearth of practical information about how music is constructed. Music Composition Toolbox offers modules, examples and exercises which introduce and illustrate a range of useful basic composition techniques. In this book the student will encounter suggestions covering pitch, rhythm, harmony, texture, timbre and organising material. It also deals with creativity and aims to provide initial inspiration.
This course uses musical examples from the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th century periods, in addition to relevant examples from contemporary popular artists and styles.
