Losing golf balls is an unfortunate part of the game and knowing the rules is important for scoring and pace of play. The most common way to deal with a lost ball is to replay the shot with a two-stroke penalty – known as stroke and distance relief.

You can't just play another one, you have to use the word provisional when stating that you are playing one. If you don't declare it a provisional, that ball is now in play as your three off the tee even if you find your first one.

There are now a few different scenarios, we’ll explain each of them and what to do. After you’ve determined that you’ve got a lost golf ball, you must take what the USGA calls stroke-and-distance relief.
If a ball is lost or out of bounds, the player must take stroke-and-distance relief by adding one penalty stroke and playing the original ball or another ball from where the previous stroke was made (see Rule 14.6).
