The bathypelagic zone or bathyal zone (from Greek βαθύς (bathýs), deep) is the part of the open ocean that extends from a depth of 1,000 to 4,000 m (3,300 to 13,000 ft) below the ocean surface. It lies between the mesopelagic above and the abyssopelagic below.
What is the bathyopelagic zone? The bathyal zone plunges from roughly 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) to 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) below the ocean's surface. It lies between the mesopelagic zone, which is shallower, and the abyssopelagic zone, which is deeper. This realm is defined by a crushing embrace of hydrostatic pressure due to its immense depth.
The ocean water column is made up of five zones: the sunlight zone (epipelagic), the twilight zone (mesopelagic), the midnight zone (bathypelagic), the abyssal zone (abyssopelagic) and the hadal zone (trenches). The upper layer of the ocean is known as the sunlit, or euphotic, zone.
bathypelagic zone, Worldwide zone of deep ocean waters, about 3,000–13,000 ft (1,000–4,000 m) below the surface. It is inhabited by a wide variety of marine forms, including eels, fishes, mollusks, and others.
bathyal zone, marine ecologic realm extending down from the edge of the continental shelf to the depth at which the water temperature is 4° C (39° F). Both of these limits are variable, but the bathyal zone is generally described as lying between 200 and 2,000 m (660 and 6,600 feet) below the surface.
Bathypelagic. The bathypelagic zone is known as the “midnight” zone for its characteristically lightless waters. At 1,000-4,000 meters below, no light is able to penetrate the ocean water this deep, preventing any primary production. The only source of light in this zone comes from organisms using bioluminescence (National Weather Service).
Definition. The bathypelagic zone is a layer of the ocean located between 1,000 and 4,000 meters deep, characterized by complete darkness and high pressure. This zone is home to unique organisms that have adapted to the extreme conditions, making it a significant area for understanding deep-sea biodiversity and ecology.
