16 Μαΐ 2011 · In the summer of 1863, Union forces under the command of Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant defeated Confederate General John Pemberton at the Battle of Champion Hill, the largest of Grant’s Vicksburg Campaign.
The Battle of Champion Hill (aka Champion's Hill) [3] of May 16, 1863, was the pivotal battle in the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War (1861–1865).
Champion’s Hill rose precipitously to the northwest of the Jackson Road, its steep slopes covered with tangled, dense undergrowth. The hillside gave way abruptly to thickly forested ridges and brier-choked ravines.
The Union victory at Champion Hill, and the next day at the Big Black River Bridge, forced the Confederates into a doomed position inside the fortifications of Vicksburg. This article describes the battle of Champion Hill, a Union victory which occurred on May 16, 1863, during the Vicksburg Campaign.

But the victory at Champion Hill foreshadowed the ultimate success of his campaign. May 16, 1863, was a disastrous day for Pemberton. His army lost 381 killed, 1,018 wounded, and 2,441 missing out of the 23,000 men he led into battle, coupled with the loss of 27 vital artillery pieces.
