Bereshit Rabbah is a talmudic-era midrash on the book of Genesis. It interprets most of Genesis (with the exception of genealogies and such) with verse-by-verse and often word-by-word commentary. Written in Hebrew, mixed with Aramaic and occasional Greek words, its style is simple and clear.
While quoting many midrashim and Talmudic passages, Rashi, in his commentary, states that his purpose is to present the pshat (contextual meaning) of the text. Read the text of Rashi on Genesis online with commentaries and connections.

Author:Umberto Cassuto. Composed: Jerusalem. Umberto (Moshe David) Cassuto, a twentieth-century Italian historian, rabbi, and scholar, wrote a popular Hebrew commentary on the Bible, as well as more detailed commentaries on the book of Genesis and part of the book of Exodus.
