Umberto (Moshe David) Cassuto, a twentieth-century Italian historian, rabbi, and scholar, wrote a popular Hebrew commentary on the Bible, as well as more detailed commentaries on the book of Genesis and part of the book of Exodus.

1. Note the temper in which Abraham speaks here. The very existence of Ishmael was a memorial of Abraham’s failure in faith and patience. For he thought that the promised heir was long in coming, and so he thought that he would help God.

David Guzik commentary on Genesis 17, where God confirms His promise to Abram again, appears to him and changes his name to Abraham.
—The Jewish interpreters regard Abraham’s laugh as one of joy, and Sarah’s (Genesis 18:12) as one of unbelief. We may, however, well doubt whether there really was this difference between them; but our Lord confirms the View that joy was uppermost in Abraham’s heart ( John 8:56 ).
