The first one on our 10 best ROM hacks for Nuzlocke challenges is Pokemon Polished Crystal. This game is a GBC ROM hack but is just as good. The interesting part is that the game has a built-in Nuzlocke mode.
We’ll follow up with some all-around fantastic hacks that make good Nuzlocke options on the grounds of quality alone. Pokémon Sacred Gold & Storm Silver focuses on rebalancing the games, bringing in some new ‘mons from more recent generations, and adding a bunch of surprises and QoL improvements.
Volt White/Blaze Black and Sacred Gold/ Storm Silver: Amazing enhancement hacks that improve so much, have great difficulty and fix so many issues. A Tier: Renegade Platinum- almost the same as Volt White and co. Too easy compared to the S tier stuff.
If you're looking for a vanilla ROM to nuzlocke, I'd recommend either Fire Red or Emerald. Both are fairly forgiving. I also found Black 2 to be easy, but I think I just got lucky. If you're looking for a Romhack, Pokemon Unbound and Pokemon Gaia are both great.
Radical Red. All pokemon gen 1-8, super hard, level cap, hardcore mode (pls don't), super smart ai and more bosses and rivals.
A brilliant ROM hack, Pokémon Emerald Trashlocke Edition changes the game such that you encounter only “bad” Pokémon. Your initial Pokémon, for instance, Goldeen, Slugma, and Sunkern aren’t the usual reliable Pokémon that can help you get through the game.
