14 Δεκ 2022 · Full recovery after a big toe amputation or first ray amputation can take 6-8 weeks. Physical therapy may also be recommended to help you regain strength and mobility in your foot. Your doctor will recommend you go to physical therapy 3 times a week for 1 month.
Amputation of a toe is relatively a short procedure that may take about 30 to 60 minutes and is performed by a skilled surgeon in a hospital setup. You may need to stay in the hospital for two to seven days or even more in case of complications.
After an amputation, it may take up to two months for the wound to heal. If a wound does not heal properly, it can increase your risk of severe complications such as infection. Seeing a wound care specialist at the first sign of a problem can help prevent severe complications from developing.
Toe Amputation. Partial or total amputation may be indicated where a deformed and painful toe is unsalvageable or where just correcting the position of the toe would be difficult and complicated surgery. This usually occurs when there is no room to straighten it e.g. with an associated bunion deformity of the big toe.
The majority of patients undergoing a debridement or amputation will return home the same day. Some may need to stay in hospital for a couple of days but you’ll be advised about this in advance.
