Scientists study biodiversity to better understand the interconnectedness of species and their roles within an ecosystem. Increasing urbanization can lead to a decline in biodiversity as natural habitats are destroyed or fragmented.
I examined the biodiversity for the Long Leaf Pine Savanna, and the ways various land management strategies affect the existence and behavior of various species differently. I will also conduct an experiment while using the scientific method to identify how each specific strategy impacts the ecosystem.
Scientists use biodiversity to measure the health of a particular ecosystem or habitat. For example, a pond with lily pads, aquatic grasses, insects, frogs, fish, and birds has a high biodiversity and would be considered a healthy ecosystem.
