7 Ιουν 2022 · We usually split it into five primary ocean basins due to historical, cultural, and geographical factors: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern Ocean basins. The ocean holds about 97% of the world’s water and supports 90% of the planet’s biosphere.
The ocean contains an astonishing totality of genetic species and ecosystem diversity still mostly unknown but with significant implication for food production, energy, public health, business and industry, ecosystem services, and leisure, cultural and aesthetic value.
14 Δεκ 2016 · Marine biodiversity is an aggregation of highly inter-connected ecosystem components or features, encompassing all levels of biological organization from genes, species, populations to ecosystems, with the diversity of each level having structural and functional attributes (Table 1).
Experiments in coastal ecosystems, particularly seagrass meadows and kelp forests, have shown that biological diversity in the oceans is essential for maintaining the ecosystem functions described above.
The richest sources of biodiversity on Earth are found in tropical rainforests and the ocean. Why is biodiversity important? All species are an integral part of their ecosystem by performing specific functions that are often essential to their ecosystems and often to human survival as well.
10 Οκτ 2018 · Here, we used phylogenetic approaches to address the causes of richness patterns among global marine regions, comparing the relative importance of colonization time, number of colonization events, and diversification rates (speciation minus extinction).
Marine biodiversity, the variety of life in the ocean and seas, is a critical aspect of all three pillars of sustainable development—economic, social and environmental—supporting the healthy ...
