  2. Birth order has long been thought to have a lasting influence on people’s lives through its effects on social customs and by fostering individual differences in personality and social behavior.

  3. The two most con-sistent findings in the birth order literature are: (1) greater educational attainment, including college attendance, among first-borns (including only children), and (2) first-borns are more affiliative and dependent than later-borns.

  4. Birth order refers to the order in which a child is born in the family. This order differs within families and affects an individual’s life. The present study aims to assess the influence of birth order on personality and adjustment in young adults.

  5. Figure 1 presents the distribution of ages by birth order positions of the children, which testifies that the sample contains variation in ages at each birth order position, an important requirement not to confound birth order effects with those of age.

This study examines classic birth order effects on the following variables: intelligence, openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, impulsivity, sense of selfconcept and self-control, and gender attitudes, which could be indicative of a more traditional viewpoint.
