The Connemara pony, an Irish native breed, originated in the part of County Galway known as Connemara, west of Lough Corrib and bordering the Atlantic Ocean in the Republic of Ireland. The Connemara pony is considered an endangered breed under EU law.
In 1995 the Connemara Pony Breeders’ Society decided to establish a heritage centre / museum dedicated solely to the Connemara Pony, given this great interest in Ireland ‘s only native equine breed.
The Station House Museum is located on the site of the old Clifden Railway Station and provides visitors with a history of Clifden and its founder John D’Arcy, the Connemara Pony, the Galway to Clifden railway line, Millars Mill and Alcock and Brown (first transatlantic flight).

The visitor centre at The Connemara Pony National Stud near Renvyle, County Galway, offers guided tours, talks and demonstrations on the Connemara pony. Their equestrian centre has something to offer both the novice and the accomplished rider with trekking through the breathtaking rugged Connemara landscape along the Wild Atlantic Way.
