Pennisetum alopecuroides viridescens, commonly called Moudry Grass or Black Foxtail Fountain Grass, features striking, fuzzy, wheat colored bloom heads flushed with smoky, dark purple-black. Well formed 36" inch grass clumps have deep green blades that turn to golden-beige in the fall.
This cultivar freely self-seeds and can become invasive. Cutting off the flower stalks before the seed is produced is recommended. Grows best in a moist, well-drained soil, in full sun to light shade.
Pennisetum 'Moudry', what we call Black Fountain Grass, is an easy to grow ornamental perennial grass adored for its distinctive and showy, foxtail-like dark purple to almost-black flower spikes that rise above an attractive clump of gracefully arching green leaves that turn bright golden-yellow in fall.
Black Fountain Grass has striking purplish black fluffy flowers, adding both color and textural interest to the landscape. A warm season perennial grass, it is useful both as a specimen and planted in mass as a groundcover. Excellent in rock gardens and near water features. Prefers full sun and well drained soil.
‘Moudry’ (often called black fountain grass, P. alopecuroides var. viridescens) has deep maroon fl ow-ers produced 3-5 weeks later in the season than the species. The plant is vigorous, growing to 2½ -3 feet tall and wide, with wider leaves and more upright infl orescences than the other types.
Pennisetum alopecuroides, commonly called fountain grass, is a warm season, clump-forming grass native to grassy hillsides, roadsides, and meadows in East Asia. Mature clumps will reach 2.5-5' tall with an equal spread.
