June is African American Music Appreciation Month! Created by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, this month celebrates the African American musical influences that comprise an essential part of our nation’s treasured cultural heritage.

It’s an opportunity to highlight the contributions of Black artists and position Black art at the center of American culture across popular music and beyond.
During Black Music Appreciation Month, we honor Black musicians, singers, and contributors to the music industry—past and present—whose innovative talents unite us in joy as much as in sorrow and healing.
Created in 1979, Black Music Month celebrates the African American musical influences that are an essential part of our nation’s treasured cultural heritage. Each June, NBAF hosts a tribute to a Black music icon, genre or movement, and connects it and its history to the larger artistic and cultural movements that it inspires.
Black Music Appreciation Month is an annual celebration of African-American music in the United States. It was initiated as Black Music Month by President Jimmy Carter, who, on June 7, 1979, decreed that June would be the month of Black music. [1]
