Lice are small, wingless insects that infest the hairs, skin, and feathers of animals. Clinical signs include pruritus, alopecia, and occasionally anemia. Diagnosis is based on the inspection of predilection sites and visualization of lice or nits (eggs on hair).
Lice have three main body parts: a head, a thorax and an abdomen (these have been labeled in lice pictures 22 and 25) and, like most other insects, lice have six legs (three on each side) that originate from the underside of the mid-section of the body (thorax).

Lice infestation can occur in debilitated or stray dogs and cats, but is rare in populations treated with monthly flea and tick preventatives. As is true for other species, pruritus, self-trauma and roughened haircoat are common clinical signs.
