Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African-American community and of the contemporary black elite.
Booker was nine years old when a government man came to the plantation and read a long letter to the slaves telling them they were free. It was the Emancipation Proclamation of 1865. He wrote that his mother kissed all her children, tears of joy streaming down her face.
American educator Booker T. Washington was the first president of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute (now Tuskegee University). During his time there, from 1881 to 1915, he oversaw an expansion of the buildings and staff. His mission was to provide practical training for African Americans.
