  2. Use a booster seat until the belt fits correctly. A booster seat is often needed until 4ft 9 in (57” or 145 cm) tall. Your child may be 12 years old before ready for an adult safety belt. Children should ride in an adult seat belt in the back seat once they outgrow a booster seat.

  3. Your child should use a booster seat until they are tall enough to pass all the requirements of the seat belt test - their feet should reach the floor, knees should be over the edge of the seat, and the vehicle seat belt should fit appropriately across their collar bone and around their lap.

  4. Boosters do this by providing two features not found on the regular vehicle seat: support for a child’s knees, and seat belt guides. Support for a child’s knees: Boosters are shallow (short in the leg area) and thus allow a child’s knees to bend comfortably over the edge of the seat.

  5. Backless Booster Seat: A backless booster seat is designed to boost the child’s height so the seat belt fits properly. It does not provide head and neck support. It’s only to be used in vehicles that have head rests or high seat backs and must be used with lap-and-shoulder seat belt.

Never place anything behind the child’s back or under the child unless it comes with the car seat. For premature babies, ask the health care provider what car seat should be used. 7. Backless boosters can be used if a child's head is supported up to the top of the ears by the vehicle's back seat or head support. Combination seats are high-back seats that can be used with a harness as forward-facing safety seat or with a seatbelt as a booster seats.
