Fuel-Supply Pump. At the driveshaft end of the injection pump is a positive displacement, vane-type fuel-supply pump, Figure 3. It (sometimes with an additional outside-supply pump) is used to bring fuel from the tank and send pressurized fuel to the distributor plunger and the injection timing advance mechanism.
All in-line fuel-injection pumps have a plunger-and-barrel assembly for each cylinder. As the name implies, this com-prises the pump barrel and the corre-sponding plunger. The pump camshaft integrated in the pump and driven by the engine, forces the pump plunger in the delivery direction.
The function of a diesel fuel injection system is to inject precise amounts of diesel at the correct time to produce clean combustion. The design of these systems has evolved over time from systems using mechanical rotary pumps to today’s modern common rail systems.
