This article addresses issues of methodological practice in educational research from the perspective of Bourdieu's field theory. It concerns the changing methodological topography of educational research. We draw attention to the consequences of change for successive generations of researchers and the knowledge they create.

Bourdieu made many advancements which inform educational research today, and this chapter focuses on three main areas: education and social reproduction; education and cultural capital; and education and symbolic violence.
Bourdieu developed a highly original “theory of practice” and set of conceptual thinking tools: habitus, field, and cultural capital. His approach sought to rise above conventional oppositions between subjectivism and objectivism.
Bourdieu’s theory of cultural reproduction has been highly influen-tial within the sociology of education. This paper will provide a critical introduction to Bourdieu’s theory regarding the cultural reproduction of educational advantage, and an overview of the empirical literature on cultural reproduction.
