Normal values for esophageal acid exposure were defined for a manometrically positioned, transnasally inserted, Bravo pH capsule. An abnormal composite pH score, obtained in either the first or second 24-hour recording period, was the most accurate method of identifying patients with GERD.
Esophageal impedance pH monitoring provides quantitative data on the level of esophageal acid exposure and on the temporal correlation between the patient's symptoms and reflux events. Normal impedance pH values for off PPI therapy have been suggested.
The Bravo pH test is the first catheter-free way to measure the amount of pH in your esophagus and is generally used to diagnose GERD. An endoscope is briefly passed through your mouth and into your esophagus to place a small gelcap that detects pH levels; the gelcap stays in place for 24 to 48 hours as you go about your daily activities.
