Moderately fast-growing and long-lived, Morella californica (Pacific Wax Myrtle) is a densely bushy, evergreen shrub with slender, ascending branches clothed with small, narrow, glossy, dark-green leaves, serrated on their margins.
Plant spacing. To grow as a hedge, plant these shrubs about 3 or 4 feet apart. In a mixed bed, allow 4 feet between this plant and other shrubs. Come out from the house 4 feet. Near a drive or walkway, come in 4 or 5 feet. These shrubs grow too fast to make good container plants.
Be sure to plant your wax myrtle hedge in an area that receives full sun. Space your plants at least three feet apart to allow for proper air circulation. Mulch your plants to help retain moisture and keep the roots cool.
