21 Αυγ 2020 · Cædmon's Hymn is an unpretentious, uncomplicated 7th C hymn (spiritual poem) written in the alliterative style of its native Northumbrian AngloSaxon. It reveals the cosmology and spiritual world view of the AngloSaxon peasant, a voice of the unlettered that is usually unsung in the annals of ancient history.

The poem is known from 21 manuscript copies, making it the best-attested Old English poem after Bede's "Death Song" (35 witnesses) and the best attested in the poetic corpus in manuscripts copied or owned in the British Isles during the Anglo-Saxon period.
