4 Ιαν 2024 · Trousseau’s sign is considered positive when a carpopedal spasm of the hand and wrist occurs after an individual wears a blood pressure cuff inflated over their systolic blood pressure for 2 to 3 minutes.
To elicit the sign, a blood pressure cuff is placed around the arm and inflated to a pressure greater than the systolic blood pressure and held in place for 3 minutes. This will occlude the brachial artery.
This sign is named after Dr. Armand Trousseau, a French internist, who is credited with its discovery in 1861. Its presence is suggestive of hypocalcemia. Technique [edit | edit source] Place the sphygmomanometer cuff around the arm as you would for measuring blood pressure. Slowly inflate the cuff up to 20 mmHg and wait for 2 - 3 minutes.
Trousseau’s sign a specific type of muscle spasm that occurs in the hand and wrist due to neuromuscular irritability, which tends to be a definitive sign of hypocalcemia (low calcium level in the blood).
1 Μαΐ 2023 · Trousseau’s sign for latent tetany is most commonly positive in the setting of hypocalcemia. [1] The sign is observable as a carpopedal spasm induced by ischemia secondary to the inflation of a sphygmomanometer cuff, commonly on an individual’s arm, to 20 mmHg over their systolic blood pressure for 3 minutes. 5 Μαΐ 2011 · Trousseau sign is elicited in hypocalcemia when the ionized calcium level is 1.75–2.25 mmol/L. 1 The hand adopts a characteristic posture when the sphygmomanometer cuff is inflated above the systolic blood pressure within 3 minutes.
