Prior to adopting a proposed name, the name may be reserved for a period of 60 days. A preliminary search of corporation, limited liability company and limited partnership names already of record with the California Secretary of State can be made online through our Business Search.
To request the reservation of a corporation, limited liability company or limited partnership name, complete the enclosed Name Reservation Request Form, attach a check in the amount of $10 (made payable to the Secretary of State) and submit the request:

State shall not file a document or grant a name reservation that includes a proposed corporate name that is not distinguishable in the records of the Secretary of State from that of an existing corporate name.
All you have to do is reserve the name by filing a Name Reservation Request form. You’ll need to hand-deliver or mail this form to the California Secretary of State’s office and you’ll pay a $10 fee.
