With some exceptions, Palomar Observatory is open to the public daily. These exceptions are Caltech institutional holidays (e.g., Juneteenth, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, December 24 through January 2), certain maintenance operations, and for possible weather emergencies.
There are 45 astronomical observatories in the state of CA that have telescopes used for astronomy research. Some observatories are complexes that host multiple telescopes at the same site. Not all observatories may be open to the public. Please contact them for any public outreach programs.
Every observatory (some planetariums, too) on the list have public access to the BIG telescopes and most are completely FREE. Take note that this list is for open-to-the-public observatories located in America, only.
28 Ιαν 2019 · The Observatory is open from 9 am to 3 pm, and may be closed to the public due to severe weather and/or dangerous conditions. The A.W. Greenway Jr. Visitor Center and the Visitors Gallery inside the 200” Hale Telescope dome are the public parts of the observatory.
30 Σεπ 2022 · Lick Observatory is located on the summit of Mount Hamilton, California, roughly 20 miles east of San Jose. The observatory is open to the public year-round Saturday and Sunday, from 12 to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and tours of inside the dome of the 36-inch Great Refractor are given every hour on the half hour by the Gift Shop.
We engage the local community with public telescope viewings. More than 2,400 guests visit the observatory each year for the Summer Series. Visitors have a chance to view a glimpse of the stars through two historic telescopes and listen to lectures by world-renowned astronomers.
