6 Απρ 2016 · Today Camp Leakey still operates as an active research facility for researchers from Indonesia and all over the world and is the site of the longest continuous study of orangutans in the world conducted by one principal investigator and her local assistants and students.
The OFI's research facilities are located in the Indonesian owned part of Borneo, the third largest island in the world. Camp Leakey is where the research on orangutans is conducted and also where rehabilitated orangutans are released.

Projects have ranged from orangutan, proboscis monkey, gibbon and leaf-eating monkey behaviour and ecology, to studies of orangutan sign language abilities and cognition, to leech behaviour, and river system ecology. As an active research facility, Camp Leakey welcomes day visitors with local guides.
Established by Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas and associates in 1986, OFI operates Camp Leakey, an orangutan research centre within Tanjung Puting National Park, and runs the Orangutan Care Centre and Quarantine facility in the Dayak village of Pasir Panjang, near Pangkalan Bun, which is home to over 330 displaced orangutans.
