Problem #3: Pipe Bursting. PEX pipes are designed to be flexible, which makes them less prone to burst than rigid pipes. However, if the pipes are exposed to extreme temperatures or pressure, they can still burst. Pipe bursting can result in significant water damage and can be expensive to repair.
PEX is flexible and performs better in freezing conditions than rigid pipes like copper, PVC and CPVC. These other pipes are more at risk of the water freezing in them, making them susceptible to weakening and bursting. Explore how PEX performs in cold weather and how to prevent future pipe bursts.
7 Νοε 2020 · The best thing you can do to prevent underground water lines from freezing, whether the pipes are PEX or anything else, is to make sure that your lines are buried below the frost line. Click here to check your frost line depth with the National Weather Service website.
16 Φεβ 2020 · The person installing the copper should have taken precautions to prevent heat from getting to the PEX pipes but clearly did not do so. The damage has been done and the bulges show that failure is likely since it's the water pressure and NOT air in the system that is causing the weakened area to expand.
25 Φεβ 2021 · PEX materials have a minimum short-term burst pressure of 475 psi. This is the estimated maximum internal pressure that can be applied to the pipe before failure is expected. In other words, when the pressure caused by the ice's outward expansion exceeds approximately 475 psi, the pipe will rupture.
22 Σεπ 2024 · Pipe Size: Larger pipes require fittings with higher pressure ratings to handle the increased water flow. Temperature: PEX fittings can withstand higher pressures at lower temperatures. Installation Method: Incorrect installation can compromise the fitting’s pressure capacity.
PEX pipes are less likely to burst when frozen due to their material design features: The flexible material allows pipes to expand when water inside them freezes. PEX can expand up to three times its original diameter without breaking, reducing the likelihood of bursting.
