My first attempt at growing Shiitake mushrooms on shredded wheat straw based substrate using the "Straw" Shiitake strain from Mycelium Emporium.
There are a few shiitake mushroom strains that can be grown on straw. However, it isn’t recommended by most mycologists, who prefer to use wood substrates that replicate how shiitakes grow in nature.
Rainwater, boiled water, or other non-chlorinated water is best. But you can use water right out of your garden hose if that’s all you have access to. Once your logs have soaked for 24 hours, bring them back to your shady area and stand them in a vertical (upright) position.

To grow mushrooms on straw, the straw must first be hydrated and pasteurised by soaking in either very hot water or water with lime dissolved in it, before being thoroughly drained. Spawn is then mixed with the straw before it's packed densely into tubular grow bags or reusable containers for incubation and eventually fruiting.
