The aim of the research reported on in this article was to contribute to an understanding of how women academics experience career success; how their choices and challenges impact on their career advancement; and how the playing fields in academia can be levelled.
It is found that women experience barriers to career advancement at all stages of their career develop-ment. The discussion then centers on how to improve scientific consensus on career barriers to support intervention on behalf of women.
Purpose-The paper innovates on the existing literature by assessing the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) tertiary education enrolment and career choice in a small country setting and by extending on Master and Meltzoff.
