9 Φεβ 2024 · To visit Carter House today is to step back in time and experience an uncanny nostalgia, perhaps a stirring of ancestral memories embedded deep in the genes, provoked by the elegant beauty of handcrafted tools, deep stone fireplaces and cedar beams.
Carter House is believed to be one of the oldest Bermuda vernacular farmhouses in St David’s and indeed Bermuda surviving largely in its original structure and form for over 3 centuries. The House is now a museum preserving the one of a kind culture and history of the St David’s Islanders.
The house is a classic early Bermuda vernacular structure and certainly in a beautiful setting. It houses a museum exhibiting the history, people and culture of the unique St Davids islanders. It has the best exhibit of Palmetto products in Bermuda (a dying art) as well as 18th century tools.
Built in 2012 to commemorate Bermuda’s 400th anniversary, the tiny cabin features Bermuda cedar beams, a thatched palmetto roof, and clay walls held together with lime oil.
This 17th-century Bermudian farmhouse, known to be one of Bermuda's oldest homes, was built by the family of Christopher Carter, one of the island’s original settlers. Museum exhibits are dedicated to whaling, fishing, farming and other aspects of daily life in Bermuda’s early days.
