31 Μαΐ 2024 · Cataloochee is home to one of the park's two main elk herds and preserves rich cultural history nestled in a valley surrounded by rising mountains. The nearby Balsam Mountain area offers cooler temperatures with its high elevation and has beautiful views that overlook the valleys.
They found it in the Smoky Mountains. Although Cataloochee Valley is the most remote of the Appalachian farming communities, it became the largest and most prosperous. At its height, it boasted 1,251 residents. They farmed, planted apple trees, and traded with outsiders.
Cataloochee Valley is nestled among some of the most rugged mountains in the southeastern United States. Surrounded by 6000-foot peaks, this isolated valley was one of the largest and most prosperous settlements in what is now Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Cataloochee is a valley in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, located in the Southeastern United States. Now a recreational and historic area within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cataloochee was once home to a substantial Appalachian community and Cherokee hunting ground.
